Sharukh Khan’s Bollywood Debut
Bollywood’s Dream Girl Hema Malini was the first film producer to offer a role to Shahrukh Khan in her first home production Dil Aashna Hai. However, the film went into production delays and Deewana ended up becoming Shahrukh Khan’s memorable debut film in 1990.
Deewana became a huge hit and earned Shahrukh Khan his first Filmfare award for Best Male Debutant. The same year he starred alongside Juhi Chawla in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman which became a hit. Dil Aashna Hai was also released the same year.
Shahrukh Khan in Negative Roles (1993 – 1994)
Shahrukh Khan owes much of his initial popularity to his memorable villainous roles in his 1993 hit films Baazigar with Kajol and Darr with Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol.
In Baazigar it was easy to understand the sympathy of the audience with Shahrukh Khan who played the role of a murderer, avenging his parent’s death. However, in Darr he played the role of psychopathic stalker and yet had the audience on his side, despite the presence of a powerful performer like Sunny Deol.
He won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Baazigar and his stuttering dialogue ‘I love you K-K-K-Kiran’ in Darr became a national craze.
In 1994, Shahrukh Khan played a darkly negative role in Anjam with Madhuri Dixit and a memorable mildly negative role in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa with Suchitra Krisnamoorthy.
SRK Movies in 1990’s
In 1995, Shahrukh Khan starred in two blockbuster movies both of which included his popular co-star Kajol. He starred in Rakesh Roshan’s Karan-Arjun alongside Salman Khan and Yash Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ).
DDLJ was a huge hit and is considered as a landmark movie in the Indian film history. Nineteen years after its release the film is still running in a theatre in Mumbai, which makes it the longest running movie ever. Shahrukh Khan won the Filmfare award for the Best Actor for his memorable performance in DDLJ.
The year 1996 was a bad one for Shahrukh Khan which saw 3 of his movies flopping – English Babu Desi Mem with Sonali Bendre, Chaahat with Pooja Bhatt and Army with Sridevi.
In 1997, Shahrukh Khan bounced back with super hit movies like Yes Boss with Juhi Chawla and Subhash Ghai’s Pardes with Mahima Chowdhry. He was also seen in Rakesh Roshan’s Koyla with Madhuri Dixit.
The most memorable 1997 movie of Shahrukh Khan was Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai with Madhuri Dixit and Karishma Kapoor. This film was a Mega Blockbuster, both in India and overseas with renowned artist M.F Hussian becoming its biggest fan. M.F. Hussain reportedly watched this film 97 times and once booked an entire theatre to watch Dil To Pagal Hai .
Shahrukh Khan received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Dil To Pagal Hai.
The next year Shahrukh Khan appeared in Mahesh Bhatt’s Duplicate and Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se. Dil Se was surprisingly not a big hit in India but was well received overseas and critically acclaimed for its music and production values.
At the end of 1998 Shahrukh Khan starred in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Kajol and Rani Mukherji. The movie directed by Karan Johar became a huge hit with the audiences, earning Shahrukh Khan yet another Filmfare Best Actor award for his memorable performance.
The years 1999 and 2000 saw Shahrukh Khan starring in Baadshah with Twinkle Khanna, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani with Juhi Chawla, Josh and Mohabbatein with Amitabh Bacchan and Aishwarya Rai.
Shahrukh Khan won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor in Mohabbatein.
Shahrukh Khan Movies (2001 ~ 2010)
In 2001, Shahrukh Khan starred in Asoka with Kareena Kapoor and another blockbuster movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, directed by Karan Johar.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham had an amazing script, cast and moving performances by Jaya Bacchan, Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bacchan, Kajol, Fareeda Jalal and Hrithik Roshan, with Kareena Kapoor adding tons and tons of glamour.
In 2002, Shahrukh Khan starred in a forgettable movie Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam alongside Salman Khan.
However, the most memorable performance from Shahrukh Khan in 2002 came in the form of Devdas, which was loved by both critics and the masses. Shahrukh Khan won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his moving performance in Devdas.
Shahrukh Khan was suffering from immense back pain while shooting for Devdas. He underwent a major back surgery to correct his prolapsed disk. After the surgery he finished shooting Kal Ho Naa Ho with Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan which became another Blockbuster movie.
In 2004, Shahrukh Khan starred in super hit movie Main Hoon Na alongside actress Sushmita Sen and Yash Chopra’s Blockbuster Veer-Zaara. He also starred in critically acclaimed movie Swades which was a hit overseas.
In 2005, SRK released his home production movie Paheli which did average business.
In 2006, Shahrukh Khan starred in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kahna and Farhan Akther’s Don which was another Blockbuster movie.
The year 2007 was a great year for Shahrukh Khan with critically acclaimed movie Chak De India and a Blockbuster movie Om Shanti Om with actress Deepika Padukone. He received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his memorable performance in Chak De India.
In 2008, Shahrukh Khan starred in Bhootnath alongside Amitabh Bacchan and in Blockbuster movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
The decade culminated with Shahrukh Khan making a special appearance in his own production Billu, starring Irfan Khan and Lara Dutta.
SRK Movies (2010 to Date)
The year 2010 saw Shahrukh Khan in Karan Johar’s internationally acclaimed movie My Name is Khan alongside Kajol. The film was appreciated by overseas audiences and was blockbuster, making 200 Crore Rupees worldwide.
In 2011, Shahrukh Khan released his own produced movie Ra. One which again was appreciated overseas making 240 Crores worldwide. He then starred in Farhan Akhter’s Don 2 which also made over 200 Crores.
In 2012, Shahrukh Khan starred in Yash Chopra’s last movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan alongside Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. The movie was declared a Blockbuster making over 250 Crores.
The year 2013 saw Shahrukh Khan breaking all box office records with his home production Chennai Express. The film was a mega success, grossing 422 Crores in worldwide collections.
In 2014, Shahrukh Khan produced another mega hit movie Happy New Year directed by Farah Khan and starring himself with Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bacchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani.
Shahrukh Khan is currently busy shooting movie Raees with actor Farhan Akthar, Dilwale with Kajol and Yash Raj Film’s movie called Fan.
Both Fan and Raees are set to release in late 2016, while Dilwale will come out in 2015.
