Recently I was really excited to see a video offering writing advice from The Fault In Our Stars author John Green. However, in this video the author appears distracted by memories of his first girl friend and does not really focus much on offering writing advice.
Disappointing isn’t it? – Well not really, the author has offered plenty of writing tips for aspiring writers in his interviews and I have compiled them all for you in his own words.
As a bonus you can also watch John Green offering some writing advice and talking about his first ever girl friend at the bottom of this post. But, make sure you are not distracted from your main focus (like John Green was!)
1. Read, read, read
2. Allow yourself to make mistakes
3. Foster empathy
4. Rewriting is key
5. Write for the right reasons
6. Learn to listen
7. Why we write
8. Finish what you begin
9. All stories are important
10. Don’t confine yourself to a single genre
I’m very interested in the traditions of certain genres (mysteries, for instance, or road trip novels) but I am not necessarily interested in writing within them. But I expect I will keep trying new things, lest I get bored. – John Green
